Mary is a member of the Education Committee of the World Parkinson Program, a faculty member of Neurochallenge, located in Sarasota, FL, and a Clinical Consultant with Passy-Muir Inc., manufacturer of a tracheostomy speaking valve.
Says Mary, “In the late 1990’s, when my own father developed Parkinsonism, my interest and desire to help patients became a personal mission. I witnessed the things my dad struggled with on a day-to-day basis, including changes to voice and swallowing. I often see that same struggle in the eyes of my patients, fueling a desire to ease their struggle and help in the ways I can.”
Speech Pathology Therapy
Speech, Occupational and Physical Therapy are often recommended to patients with Parkinson’s Disease, in an effort to maximize function and reduce more serious problems associated with symptoms.
In 1999, in response to the need for continued exercise following formal therapy, Voice Aerobics® was developed. Voice Aerobics® is a 3-part workout which incorporates breath work, stretching and voice exercise.
Participation in the Voice Aerobics™ exercise program may serve to heighten an individual’s awareness about bodily changes including: range of motion and flexibility, breath support and diaphragmatic breathing, and vocal quality and intensity.
Voice Aerobics® Songbirds© is an audio CD that provides patients voice practice whenever and wherever they go. Ms. Spremulli will guide participants through a fun demonstration.
Her newest product, Hi-VOLT 4PD™ audio CD and Voice-on-Light Bracelet, is now available. These 2 products offer guided voice practice for you to use at home on your own, or with a therapist. The calibrated, voice-activated bracelet provides real-time feedback; it lights up to let you know you when you are speaking loudly enough to be heard.
